1st October: World Vegetarian Day 2019 Details, Aim, Significance

World Vegetarian Day is celebrated every year on 1st October all over the world.

World Vegetarian Day aims to promote vegetarianism and highlights the ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.

World Vegetarian Day also educates people on the health and social benefits of making the move to eliminate meat from their diets.

In 1977, World Vegetarian Day was founded by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS). In 1978, it was endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union.

On World Vegetarian Day many vegetarian organizations and groups use this day to spread information about the benefits of vegetarianism and to educate people on how to switch to a vegetarian diet.

Benefits of Being Vegetarian

  1. Reduce the risk of major killers such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer while cutting exposure to foodborne pathogens
  2. Save animals from suffering in factory-farm conditions and from the pain and terror of slaughter
  3. Conserve vital but limited freshwater, fertile topsoil, and other precious resources
  4. Preserve irreplaceable ecosystems such as rainforests and other wildlife habitats
  5. Decrease greenhouse gases that are accelerating global warming

Note: Also, International Meatless Day, also known as the 'International Vegetarian Day' is celebrated on 25th November every year across the globe. This day also marks the birth of Sadhu T.L. Vaswani, who was a great Indian educationist and began the Mira movement for the upliftment of the Indian education system.
