The World Health Organization (WHO) launched a comprehensive plan to eliminate industrially-produced artificial Trans fats from the global food supply by 2023.
The WHO calls on governments to use the 'REPLACE' action package to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the food supply.
The elimination of Trans fats is key to protecting the health and saving lives. The global health body estimates that every year, trans fat intake leads to over 5,00,000 deaths worldwide from cardiovascular diseases.
World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health. It has 193 Member states, including 192 UN members’ states.
WHO was established on 7th April 1948, it succeeded the Health Organization, which was an agency of the League of Nations. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group and its headquarters are located at Geneva. WHO flag features the Rod of Asclepius as a symbol for healing.
WHO main function is to coordinate international efforts to control outbreaks & sponsors programs to prevent and treatment of infectious diseases such as SARS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Influenza, and HIV/AIDS, the WHO also aims to eradicate polio within the next few years.
WHO head of the organization is the Director-General, elected by the World Health Assembly. The current Director-General is Tedros Adhanom, who was appointed on 1 July 2017.
