World Hepatitis Day Observed On 28 July: Theme, Aim, Purpose, History

The World Hepatitis Day is being observed every year on July 28 around the world to spread awareness about viral hepatitis. Observance of the day seeks to encourage diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of Hepatitis.

The World Hepatitis Day also aims to provide a single global platform to raise awareness about hepatitis and influence real change in disease prevention, testing and treatment.

The World Hepatitis Day 2018, this year theme is “Test. Treat. Hepatitis“.

The World Hepatitis Day 2018 theme focuses on Support scale-up of hepatitis prevention, testing, treatment and care services, with a specific focus on promoting WHO treatment and testing recommendations.

It also focuses to demonstrate best practices and promotes universal health coverage of hepatitis services. Improve partnerships and funding in the fight against viral hepatitis.

The World Hepatitis Day was first observed in 2010. It is one of the 8 official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO chose the date 28 July as World Hepatitis Day, to mark the birth anniversary of Professor Baruch Blumberg who had discovered the hepatitis B virus. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1976) for this discovery.
