The Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned approximately Rs. 2919.55 crore for various measures to be taken to protect women in eight cities. Under this, public panic buttons and women patrol teams will be started in eight major cities. Apart from this, more and more steps will be taken to ensure the safety of women.
All these works have been approved under the Nirbhaya Fund. Eight select cities include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Lucknow.
Under the Women's Safe City project, transnational bedrooms, smart LED streetlights, single point crisis solution center, forensic and cyber crime cell will be set up for women and children.
It will be implemented in a phased manner from 2018-19 to 2020-21 in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow.
Rs 663.67 crore for Delhi, Rs 252 crore for Mumbai, Rs 425.06 crore for Chennai, Rs 253 crore for Ahmedabad, 181.32 crores for Kolkata, 667 crores for Bangalore, Rs 282.50 for Hyderabad and Rs 195 crore for Lucknow The amount is set.
This project envisages the deployment of fully female patrols such as 'Shi-Team' and accidental reaction vehicles such as 'Abhay' Van, to ensure quick and effective response system.
Under the project, State Governments can adopt measures for women protection as per their need. The 60% expenditure on the project will be borne by the Center and the rest of the state.
