India Gets Its First Floating Market at Lake Patuli In Metro City Kolkata

India gets its first floating market in metro city Kolkata. It was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee through a remote control during an event at Netaji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata on 24th January 2018.

The Lake at Patuli in South Kolkata has been transformed into the floating market by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) with an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.

The Lake Patuli’s floating market has been built on the lines of floating markets in Bangkok and Thailand, which is 500 metres long and 60 metres wide.

The Lake Patuli floating market has successfully re-established over200 shopkeepers from a nearby market that was demolished for the widening of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

The Lake Patuli floating market has introduced nearly 114 boats and 228 sellers, where they will sell fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and other products from 6 am to 9 pm every day.

As per source, two shopkeepers will share one boat and the customers will be able to walk around through wooden pathway to reach out to the vendors. The floating market has also multiple entry-exit passages.
