The Government of Uttar Pradesh has issued an order notified Vrindavan and Barsana town in Mathura district as Pavitra Teerth Sthals (as sacred pilgrimage sites) on 27 October 2017.
With this order, the two towns Vrindavan and Barsana in Mathura become the first place to be notified as Teerth Sthal in the government record.
The Principal Secretary (Religious Affairs) Sri Avinash Kumar Awasthi has stated that meat and liquor shops will be prohibited in these notified areas.
Recently, State government merged, Vrindavan, a former Nagar Palika Parishad, with the Mathura municipal board to create Mathura Nagar Nigam and Barsana is a nagar panchayat. Both Mathura Nagar Nigam and Barsana Nagar Panchayat will go to polls next month.
The government has directed the department of urban development, excise, food and drug administration, general administration and home to ensure that necessary steps are taken in his regard within three month.
