UGC directs Indian universities to ban the sale of junk/fast food on campuses: Details, Aim, Purpose, Highlights

The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India had recently issued an advisory notice that directs all the Indian universities and higher education institutions to ban the sale of junk or fast food on their campuses.

In this context, the UGC had issued a notice to vice-chancellors of all universities to ban junk food in college premises. The notice was released after a directive from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development which asked the UGC to take a strict action and ban the sale of junk food on premises of higher education institutions.

In the significant move in the interest of the health of all the students of the universities and colleges, the UGC called for the reinforcement of an earlier advisory issued on 10th November 2016.

Earlier a similar initiative was made by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which had directed all affiliated schools to take junk food out of their canteen menu. Schools were also asked to inspect lunch boxes of students, create awareness about nutritious food and regularly monitor students' health.
