World Press Day or World Press Freedom Day is observed on 3rd May every year around the world.
World Press Day is celebrated to spread & promote awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and reminds the governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
World Press Day is also marked to commemorate the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
World Press Day was first instituted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
On World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO organises conference each year to bring media professionals, press freedom organisations and UN agencies together to assess the state of press freedom worldwide and discuss solutions for addressing challenges.
On World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO selects a specific host country to organise conference with a particular theme related to press freedom, including good governance, media coverage of terrorism, impunity and the role of media in post-conflict countries.
World Press Day-2018 conference will be conducted in Ghana Accra, Ghana as a host country.
World Press Day-2018 theme of this year is "Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and the Rule of Law".
