Audrey Azoulay was elected as the Director General of United Nations Education, Scientific and Culture Organization (UNESCO) on 14 October 2017.
The UNESCO’s Executive Board voted 30 to 28 in favor of Azoulay against Qatar’s Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-kawari.
Previously, Azoulay was born on 1972 in Paris to a Moroccan Jewish Family from Essaouira. She is the daughter of Andre Azoulay who served as an Advisor to King Hassan II and Now to King Mohammed VI.
Azoulay was appointed as French Minister of Culture in 2014. She also served as French President Francois Hollande’s cultural advisor.
Now, her election will be put forward for approval to UNESCO’s 195 members on 10 November 2017.
The board election of Azoulay came the day after the United States announced that it intends to pull out of UNESCO because of its alleged anti-Israel bias.
Once confirmed by UNESCO’s 195-member General Assembly, Azoulay will succeed outgoing Director-General Irina Bokova of Bulgaria.
Azoulay will become the second French leader of the UNESCO after Rene Maheu who was UNESCO’s Director General from 1961-1975.
