United Nations International Day of Democracy observed on 15th September: Theme, Details, Aim, Significance, History

The United Nations (UN) International Day of Democracy is observed on 15th September 2018, across the world in order to raise public awareness about democracy. 

The International Day of Democracy also provides an opportunity to evaluate the state of democracy in the world.

The theme for International Day of Democracy-2018 is ‘Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World’.

The International Day of Democracy-2018 also coincides with this year’s 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, highlighting the values of freedom and respect for human rights as essential elements of democracy. 

The International Day of Democracy was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through a resolution in 2007 to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy.

The International Day of Democracy was first observed in the year 2008.

On International Day of Democracy people and organizations globally, including government agencies and non-government organizations, conduct several initiatives& events such as discussions, conferences and debates to promote democracy
