English Language Day is observed on 23 April by the United Nations traditionally celebrated as both the birthday (Baptized 26th Apri 1564) and date of death anniversary of William Shakespeare on 23rd April 1616.
English Language Day also coincides with the UNESCO designated World Book and Copyright Day on 23rd April.
English Language Day was first designated by the Department of Public Information, establishing language days for each of the Organization's six official languages which includes Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
The purpose of the UN's language days is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the United Nation organization.
The UN’s Language Days also aims to entertain as well as inform, with the goal of increasing awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community.
