English Language Day Observed On 23rd April 2018- Details, Significance, Amazing Facts

English Language Day is observed on 23 April by the United Nations traditionally celebrated as both the birthday (Baptized 26th Apri 1564) and date of death anniversary of William Shakespeare on 23rd April 1616.

English Language Day also coincides with the UNESCO designated World Book and Copyright Day on 23rd April.

English Language Day was first designated by the Department of Public Information, establishing language days for each of the Organization's six official languages which includes Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

The purpose of the UN's language days is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the United Nation organization.

The UN’s Language Days also aims to entertain as well as inform, with the goal of increasing awareness and respect for the history, culture and achievements of each of the six working languages among the UN community. 

English Language Amazing Facts

  1. The English Language is the third most spoken language in the world. There are around 360-400 million native speakers of English Language across the world.
  2. In the world, 67 countries have their official language as English.
  3. Four people out of 1.75 billion people speak the English language at a useful purpose.
  4. There are around 15 million English teachers in the world.
  5. There are 171,476 active words, 47,156 obsolete words and 9,500 derivative words in the Oxford English Dictionary. At an average, around 1000 words are added in the Oxford English Dictionary each year.
  6. In India, around 102 million people speak English Language and to which they earn 37% higher than any other country in the world.
  7. The shortest, oldest and most common English word used is ‘I’ and the shortest English sentence is ‘I AM’.
  8. The longest word in any of the major English language dictionaries is (pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis), a word that refers to a lung disease.
