International Biodiversity Day Observed On 22nd May 2018- Theme, Details, History, Celebrations

The International Biodiversity Day is observed every year on 22 May to spread and increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

The International Biodiversity Day-2018, the theme is ‘Celebrating 25 Years of Action for Biodiversity’.

The International Biodiversity Day-2018 theme marks 25th anniversary of the entry into force of Convention on Biological Diversity at United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Headquarters, Nairobi on 22 May 1992.

The International Biodiversity Day-2018 theme also highlights progress made in the achievement of its objectives at national and global levels.

The International Biodiversity Day was declared by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2000 via resolution 55/201.

Celebrations

On the International Biodiversity Day, several events are organized globally to increase the understanding of the important role of biodiversity in our future. Activities include such as:

Translating booklets, leaflets and other educational resources into local languages.

Distributing information on biodiversity via schools, colleges, universities, newspapers, radio and television.

Exhibitions and seminars for students, professionals and the general public.

Showings of movies on environmental issues.

Presentations of programs to preserve endangered species or habitats.

Planting trees and other plants that help prevent erosion.

In India, National Mission for Clean Ganga and World Wildlife Federation (WWF)-India jointly organised a workshop on Ganga and its Bio-diversity: Developing a Road Map for Habitat and Species Conservation in New Delhi.

Background

The term Biological Diversity (or Biodiversity) was first coined by wildlife scientist and conservationist Raymond F. Dasmann in 1968.

Biodiversity refers to the totality of genes, species and ecosystems of a region. There are three levels of biodiversity viz. species diversity, ecosystem diversity and genetic diversity.
