The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) was celebrated on 17th May 2018 across the world to mark the anniversary of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day also aims to help spread awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day-2018, the theme is “Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for all”.
The WTISD-2018 theme will focus on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The World Telecommunication Day is celebrated annually on May 17 since 1969, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of ITC in 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.
In November 2005, the World Summit called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day to focus on the important issues of Information and Telecommunication raised by WSIS.
The General Assembly adopted the resolution in March 2006 stipulating that the World Information Society Day shall be celebrated every year on 17 May.
