UN International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day Marked On 26th April 2018- History Purpose, Significance

The United Nations International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is observed on 26th April 2018 around the world as a tribute to Ukraine’s nuclear reactor explosion in the year 1984.

The UN International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day commences events around the world dedicated to raising awareness of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the risks of nuclear energy in general.

The UN International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day-2018 is the 32nd anniversary of the 26 April 1986 nuclear disaster held in Ukraine.

The UN International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day was first adopted as a resolution by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 8th December 2016.

Background

The Chernobyl disaster was the devastating nuclear accident in the world history. A reactor in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in today's Ukraine on April 26, 1986, set to a catastrophic explosion and fire, releasing uncontrollable levels of radioactive materials into the atmosphere.

Although the accident itself caused a relatively small number of casualties, its long-term effects are extensive and will continue to pose challenges for many future generations.

An explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union, now the territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to the radiation.

Since 1986, UN organisations and major Non-Governmental Organizations and Foundations have launched more than 230 different research and assistance projects in the fields of health, nuclear safety, socio-psychological rehabilitation, economic rehabilitation, the environment, production of clean foods, and provision of information etc.
