The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on 2nd April 2018 has launched the concept of ‘Virtual ID’ in order to meet privacy concerns. It was earlier proposed in January 2018.
The UIDAI has launched the Beta version of the ‘Virtual ID’ (VID) which is a transitional 16-digit random number, integrated to any individuals Aadhaar number.
Aadhaar holders can state their Virtual ID number without actually relieving their 12-digit Aadhaar number for valid authentication or verification purpose.
Aadhaar holders will now be able to easily verify their identity for various verification purposes like for Purchasing Mobile SIM, Opening New Bank Account and all the other Government & Private verification needs by using their VID.
Aadhaar card holders can generate their VID in the Beta form from UIDAI website (www.uidai.gov.in). At present, VID can be used to update the user address.
VID can be generated by any person at a particular time valid for one day, further, they can generate it for multiple times with the automatic cancellation of previous one.
According to the UDAI, it will be mandatory for all agencies that undertake authentication to accept the VID from their users from June 1, 2018.
