The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a nodal authority for issuing Aadhaar cards, has announced the rollout of ‘Bal Aadhaar’, which is for children under 5 years of age.
Bal Aadhaar or Kid’s Aadhaar will be blue in colour, in order to distinguish it with a regular Aadhaar.
Bal Aadhaar will not require any biometric identification such as Eye’s Iris Scan or Fingerprint Scan. However, once the child crosses 5 years of age, then a regular Aadhaar would be issued, which will have the biometric details.
Bal Aadhaar initially will be linked with one of the parents Aadhaar card. It can be utilised by parents, where ever their child identification is required.
As per the UIDAI, Bal Aadhaar is not a necessity but it will be required when the child grows up and applies for Government scholarships or grants for higher education even in foreign universities.
