UPSC member Arvind Saxena has been appointed as the acting chairman of the commission from 20th June 2018.
Arvind Saxena, a 1978-batch Indian Postal Service officer, will take over the charge from incumbent Vinay Mittal who completes his term at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on 19th June 2018.
Arvind Saxena as a member of the UPSC had become the first RAW officer to be named to the commission.
The UPSC is a 10-member body beside a Chairperson. It currently comprises Chairperson Vinay Mittal and members - Arvind Saxena, Pradeep Kumar, Bhim Sain Bassi, Air Marshal AS Bhonsle, Sujata Mehta, Manoj Soni, Smita Nagaraj and M. Sathiyavathy.
As per Article 316 of the constitution, the Chairman and members of UPSC are appointed and removed by President.
The term of UPSC chairman and members is six years or until they attain the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier
The UPSC conducts civil services examination annually in three stages -preliminary, main and interview -to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
The UPSC also frames and amends recruitment rules for various services and posts under the Government.
The UPSC also advise the Government on any matter referred to the Commission by the President of India.
