Labour Secretary M Sathiyavathy took over as a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on 9th April 2018 in New Delhi.
M Sathiyavathy was administered an oath of office and secrecy as ‘UPSC Member’ by UPSC Chairman, Vinay Mittal.
M Sathiyavathy is an IAS officer of the 1982 batch of Union Territory cadre. She has working experience in several key positions under the Government of India, during the course of a career spanning over 35 years.
M Sathiyavathy has served in various important positions in the central government, including first woman chief of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Director General in the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Controller, ISRO Satellite Centre, Department of Space, member secretary, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, and additional secretary and financial adviser, Ministry of Civil Aviation among others.
M Sathiyavathy as a cadre also served in several responsible positions including Chief Secretary in Government of Puducherry.
The UPSC is a constitutional body that conducts civil services examination annually in three stages as preliminary, main and interview to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
The UPSC Chairman and 10 Members are appointed and removed by President. The chairman and members of the Commission hold office for a term of six years or until they attain the age of 65 years.
