Union Cabinet Approved New AIIMS in Deoghar, Jharkhand- Details, Features, Background

The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi has approved instituting new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Deoghar, Jharkhand. A provision of funds worth Rs. 1103 crore has been approved for the project and IIMS will be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).  

AIIMS at Deoghar will provide super specialty health care to population and help to create a large pool of doctors and other health workers in this region to be available for primary and secondary-level institutions and healthcare facilities being created under the National Health Mission (NHM).

Features

AIIMS at Deoghar will consist of the hospital with a capacity of 750 beds, trauma centre facilities, a medical college with in-take of 100 MBBS students per year and nursing college with an intake of 60 B.Sc (Nursing) students per year.

AIIMS at Deoghar will also have residential complexes and allied facilities and services, broadly on the pattern of AIIMS, New Delhi. It will also have 20 Speciality and Super Speciality Departments including 15 Operation Theatres. It will also consist of Ayush Department with 30 beds for providing treatment facilities in the traditional system of medicine.

Background

Work of AIIMS Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Kalyani (West Bengal) and Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh) is in progress.

AIIMS at Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh)  construction is about to start. AIIMS at Bathinda (Punjab), Guwahati (Assam), Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh) has also been sanctioned.
