National Maritime Day Observed on 5th April 2018 in India- Details, Theme, History, Significance

National Maritime Day (NMD) is observed every year on 5th April 2018 in India.

National Maritime Day is marked to acknowledge the 99 years old maritime history of India, which is known for its naval abilities since ancient times.

In India, on 5 April 1919 navigation history was created when SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd journeyed to the United Kingdom. This marked a red letter day in Indian shipping history when sea routes were controlled by the British.

National Maritime Day was first celebrated on 5th April 1964. This year NMD marks its 55th anniversary of celebrations.

National Maritime Day-2018 was celebrated with the theme 'Indian Shipping - An Ocean of opportunity'.

National Maritime Day-2018 theme foster awareness in supporting safe and environmentally sound commerce between continents across the world is stressed upon.

National Maritime Day celebration committee has proposed to establish its highest award called ‘Varuna’ to confer to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the Indian maritime sector on this day. Apart, those who have made distinguished achievements or made contributions to education and training in the sector are also awarded on the day.

The ‘National Maritime Day Award of Excellence’ shall also be given during celebrations which consist of a trophy and a citation. It is given to recognize and honor persons for their lifetime exceptional and distinguished achievements or performance at the senior functional level in Indian Maritime
