Scientists have discovered a new human organ hiding in plain sight of the human body, in a discovery they believe this could help them in understanding its impact on diseases such as cancer and its spreading.
According to the scientific study, this newly discovered organ is named as ‘interstitium’, is a series of interconnected, fluid-filled compartments found throughout the body.
These fluid-filled compartments are found under the skin, as well as lining the gut, lungs, bile ducts, blood vessels & muscles, and join together to form a network supported by a mesh of strong, flexible proteins.
Scientists study also claimed that the ‘interstitium’ is among the body's largest organs.
The interstitium had previously been unnoticed despite being one of the largest organs in the human body because the “fixing” method for assembling medical microscope slides involves draining away fluid – therefore destroying the organ’s structure.
Earlier, in 2017, an Irish surgeon has also discovered a new human organ called the ‘mesentery’, which connects the intestine to the abdomen. Although, it’s identifiable function is still not known.
