A study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has predicted that the Earth’s sixth mass extinction may become a reality by the year 2100 due to increasing carbon pressure on oceans.
The study titled, Thresholds of Catastrophe in the Earth System, was recently published in the international scientific journal Science Advances.
The study (Thresholds of Catastrophe in the Earth System), was conducted by Daniel H. Rothman, professor of geophysics at MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.
It is considered that, in the past 540 million years, the Earth has seen five mass extinction events.
In all scenarios, the study finds that by the end of the century the carbon cycle will either be close to or well beyond, the threshold for catastrophe.
