World Sparrow Day is a day marked on 20th March every year across the world, to raise awareness of the diminishing population & extinct threats of the house sparrows and other common birds to urban environments.

World Sparrow Day is an international social initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India, Mohammed Dilawar, an Indian conservationist who initiated his work helping the house sparrow in Nashik, Maharashtra.

World Sparrow Day was started in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and other numerous national and international organisations across the world.

World Sparrow Day was first celebrated in 2010 all over the world. It was celebrated by carrying out different kinds of activities and events like art competitions, awareness campaigns, and sparrow processions as well as interactions with media.

World Sparrow Day main aim is to integrate a meeting for people from all over the world to come together in different platforms like social media etc in order to raise awareness and to discuss the various ways for conserving common biodiversity or species of lower conservation status.

World Sparrow Day theme is “I LOVE SPARROWS” which is devised in hope that people around the world may relate their love & concern with sparrows.

According to a report, the house sparrows are in the red list of extinct species, they have shown an 84% of their extinction around the world, since the year 2010.

The house sparrows are becoming a victim of 'mindless urbanisation', which is depriving the bird of its natural habitat.
