New scheme to develop inland waterways for cargo, passengers

 

 

The Shipping Ministry to develop water transport for cargo and passengers soon, invest Rs.1300 crore 

The shipping industry has identified 37 inland waterways to develop them for transportation of cargo and the passengers in the next 2 or 3 years

The rivers originating from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Goa and West Bengal.

These are financially sustainable for development and can be used for inland waterways.

The proposal of development of the rivers Ghaghra, Gandak, Barak and Kosi Rivers have been initiated.

106 waterways notifed for inland waterways

Total 106 waterways were notified out of which 18 may not be technically viable due to traffic issues and other 52 waterways is being accessed for the final call.

This year government will be spending Rs.1300 crore in waterways and for the next year government will be spending Rs.1500 crore.

Inland Waterways can be a supplement for roadways and rail transport as waterways is cheaper and safer as compare to the other two.
