The Ross Sea of Antarctica has been declared as Marine Protected Area to protect the Earth’s most pristine marine System by CCAMLR
A landmark International agreement was signed at Hobart Australia among 24 countries and European Union Commission for Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) meeting.
Ross Sea is one of the last intact marine ecosystems in the world, it is also the home to 38% of world’s Adelie Penguins, 30% of Antarctic petrels and 6% of Antarctic minke whales.
Marine Protected Areas will bring blanket ban on commercial fishing across three quarters of its area for 35 years.
Ross Sea is also the home of huge numbers of krill, a staple food for species such as whales and seals.
CCAMLR was aimed at conserving Antarctic marine life and to increase interest Krill resources.
