Rohingya Community: A brief history of the people of the minor ethnic community   

The Rohingya are a stateless community of Indo- Aryan origin, called as Arakanese Indians.

The Rohingya are mostly a Muslim community and a population of 1 million was estimated to live in Myanmar.

The Rohingya history traces back to the 8th century in Myanmar.

The Burma government does not recognize them as citizens under the 1982 Burmese citizenship law.  

The Rohingya are a mixture of colonial and precolonial settlers in the northern Rakhine township.

In Rakhine the majority are Buddhists and the Rohingya Muslims are a minority.

The Rohingya people are described as the most persecuted community of people in the world.

Stringent restrictions govern the Rohingya’s freedom of movement, medical assistance access, education and other basic needs.

The UNHCR (UN Refugee agency) estimates the Rohingya refugees to be 123,000 in number approximately.

The Indian government plans to put in place a socio-economic support structure for the Rakhine state.

India’s stake is a connectivity project connecting Sittwe port to Mizoram using multi-modal means.
