India celebrates its 70th Republic day on 26th January 2019 on Saturday.
In India, Republic day is celebrated every year with great pride on 26th of January to honor the Constitution of India as it came into force on the same day in the year 1950 replacing Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.
Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and came into effect on 26 January 1950, completing the country’s transition towards becoming an independent republic.
In India, Republic Day is observed as a national holiday. It was first observed in 1950.
The fifth and current President of South Africa Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is the Chief Guest on 70th Republic Day of India 2019.
This year Republic Day 2019 celebration will be special as this year will mark the 150th birth anniversary of ‘Father of the Nation’. The yearlong celebration will get started from Republic Day by paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
There will be around 17 tableaux from states/Union Territories and 6 from various ministries. The tableaux this year will be based on the theme ‘Gandhi’.
Republic Day parade will also be held at Rajpath, New Delhi. It is the largest and most important of the parades in India. The parade showcases India’s defence capability and its cultural and social heritage. It will be followed by the performance of over 600 school children.
