Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad inaugurated the Gigabit connectivity between the National Knowledge Network (NKN) of India and LEARN (Lanka Education And Research Network) of Sri Lanka on 15th January 2018, in Sri Lanka.
Gigabit is the next generation high-speed internet connectivity that will enhance the collaboration among the academic universities & institutions of India and Sri Lanka.
1 Gigabit (1 Gbps) connection is about 20 times faster than the fastest broadband internet connection which provides a speed of 1,000Mbps.
National Knowledge Network (NKN) was established in March 2010, implemented by NIC of India. NKN aims to connect all the knowledge and research institutions in the country using high bandwidth network in order to provide secure and reliable connectivity.
Later, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between India and Sri Lanka to strengthen and increase cooperation between IT sector, e-Governance and Cyber Security of both the countries.
IT Minister. RS Prasad also inaugurated a model E-office system for Sri Lanka, set up by India’s National Informatics Centre (NIC).
With this agreement, Sri Lanka has become the first country to be connected to NKN of India.
