Rajasthan Assembly passes bill  increases the reservation quota for the other Backward Cast (OBC) from 21 percent to 26 percent 

The Rajasthan Assembly has passed a bill that increases the reservation quota for raising the other Backward Cast (OBC) from 21 percent to 26 percent. The community includes Gujjars and four other castes.

With these means 5 % increase in OBC quota, the total percentage of quotas in Rajasthan has crossed 50 %. Now, the total quota in the state stands at 54 % which includes 26 % for OBCs, 16 % for SCs and 21 % for STs.

The OBC (Reservation of seats in Educational Institutions in the State and of Appointment and posts in Service under the state) Bill, which will provide reservation to the five most backward’ OBC communities.

The Bill was passed during the Rajasthan assembly’s monsoon this year in the work of widespread agitation by the Gujjars community demanding reservation under the backward classes category.

Earlier, the five communities were grouped as the special backward class casts, including, Gujjar/Gurjar, Banjara/Baldia/Labana, Gadia-Lohar/Gadalia, Raika/Rebari and Gadaria, were added in the OBC list in 1994.
