The Cabinet on Wednesday authorised extending the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), the government's flagship housing-for-all scheme, from March 2021 to March 2024 in order to meet the objective of 2.95 crore dwellings.
Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, indicated that financial support would be offered for the construction of the 155.75 lakh dwellings that remained as of March 31, 2021.
The extension of the scheme until March 2024 ensures that the remaining 155.75 lakh households, out of a total target of 2.95 crore houses under PMAY-G, will receive assistance for the construction of pucca houses with basic amenities, achieving the goal of 'Housing for All' in rural areas, according to the Cabinet.
It stated that a total of 1.65 crore PMAY-G dwellings had been built as of November 29, 2021, out of a total target of 2.95 crore. "By the deadline of August 15, 2022, it is predicted that 2.02 crore dwellings will be finished, which is nearly equal to the SECC 2011 database-based Permanent Wait List. As a result, the scheme must be extended till March 2024 in order to meet the 2.95 crore house objective," it added.
The Ken-Betwa river connecting project, estimated to cost Rs 44,605 crore, was also authorised by the Cabinet. The Cabinet agreed to provide Rs 39,317 crore in central funding for the project, which includes a grant of Rs 36,290 crore and a loan of Rs 3,027 crore.
The project will be extremely beneficial to the water-scarce Bundelkhand region, which spans MP and UP. The project will benefit the districts of Panna, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Sagar, Damoh, Datia, Vidisha, Shivpuri, and Raisen in Madhya Pradesh, as well as Banda, Mahoba, Jhansi, and Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh, according to the Cabinet.
