Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched National Seismic Programme at Village Taranga in Odisha on 12th October 2016 .
This program was launched to trace the hydro-carbon resources like oil and natural gas in Mahanadi Basin where State Steel and Mines Minister were also present.
The main objective of this programme is to recognise the major sedimentary basins across India to have better comprehension for the hydro-carbon resources.
Oil and Natural gas Corporation and Oil India Limited will be undertaking various surveys relating to hydro-carbon resources and Mahanadi basin has been chosen the first location to trace the sediments.
ONGC will be conducting approx. 40,830 LKM surveys around the country which includes 26 sedimentary basins in 18 states and union territories.
These surveys will help to explore hydro-carbon reserves in the state and will give awareness of the petroleum systems across the geographical areas.
