The Jharsuguda Airport of Odisha has been renamed as “Veer Surendra Sai Airport, Jharsuguda” approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd November 2018.
Renaming of the Jharsuguda airport in his name will fulfill the long-pending demand of the Odisha Government, which reflects the sentiments of the local public of the respective area. It will also be a befitting tribute to the contribution of Surendra Sai, the revered personality associated with the State.
Veer Surendra Sai is Odisha's well-known freedom fighter and a tribal leader who sacrificed his life fighting against the British East India Company for Indian Independence.
Veer Surendra Sai was born on 23 January 1809 in Khinda Sambalpur, Odisha. He died on 23 May 1884 (aged 75) in Asirgarh, Madhya Pradesh.
