To the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2017.
The organization is receiving the award for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapon.
The risk of nuclear weapons being used is greater than it has been for a long time.
Some state is modernizing their nuclear arsenals, and there is a real danger that more country will try to procure the nuclear weapon, as exemplified by North Korea.
Nuclear weapon poses a constant threat to humanity and all life on earth.
Previously, through binding international agreement, the international committee has adopted prohibition against landmines, cluster munitions and biological and chemical weapons.
A nuclear weapon is even more destructive but has not yet been made the object of a similar international legal prohibition.
