New Zealand’s Labor leader Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern was swearing- in ceremony On 26 October 2017, as the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Jacinda Ardern became the Prime Minister after Winston Peters of New Zealand First and Greens supported her Party to form a coalition government.
With this, the 37 years Jacinda Ardern became the second youngest New Zealand Prime Minister in 150 years.
Jacinda Ardern is the New Zealand’s third female PM to lead the country, after Jenny Shipley (1997-1999) and Helen Clark (1999-2008).
National party leader Bill English had to accept defeat despite a winning 44.4% of votes, higher than Labor’s 36%. It won 56 seats out of 120 in the parliament and is seen as the strongest opposition in New Zealand.
This was the first time since New Zealand adopted proportional voting since 1996.
