World Water Day Observed on 22 March 2018- Theme, Details, History, Purpose, Facts

World Water Day is observed on 22nd March every year around the world to enhance & promote the public awareness about the importance of water or freshwater and needs to preserve it.

On World Water Day, countries across the world are encouraged to celebrate this day by organising different events such as educational, theatrical, musical or lobbying in nature. On this day many regional, national and international NGOs also runs campaigns to raise money for water-related projects. 

World Water Day celebration's main symbol is the shape of water drop of blue color, which represents its campaign to promote the supply of clean and purified water.

World Water Day-2018, this year theme is 'Nature for Water'- exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

World Water Day-2018 theme encourages people to "seek an answer in nature" such as implementing nature-based solutions to meet scarcity of water in order to protect ecosystem by reducing floods, droughts, water pollution etc. 

World Water Day was first declared & celebrated on 22nd March 1993, by the United Nations General Assembly and this year it's the 25th World Water Day.

Some Statistical Facts About Water

Water constitutes about 71% of the Earth's surface, while the other 29% consists of continents and islands.

About 96.5% of all the Earth's water is contained within the oceans as salt water, which makes about 1,383 million cubic kilometers (km3) in volume.

The remaining 3.5% only is freshwater in form of lakes, river and frozen water of glaciers and the polar ice, which makes approx 10.6 million km3 in volume.

According to the recent report, about 1,400 million across the world, people are facing serious scarcity of freshwater therefore, it’s mandatory for us to save and conserve water for survival of life.
