International Day of Forests Observed on 21 March 2018- Theme, Details, History, Purpose

International Day of Forests or World Forestry Day is observed on 21st March every year around the world.

International Day of Forests is celebrated globally in order to enhance & promote public awareness towards communities about the values, significance and contributions of the forests in order to balance the life cycle on the earth.

On International Day of Forests, countries across the world are encouraged to undertake efforts to organize local, national, and international activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns, nurturing forest animals & birds or in taking measures to maintain the proper ecosystem.

International Day of Forests-2018, this year theme is ‘Forests and Sustainable Cities’- Let’s make our cities greener, healthier, happier place to live.

International Day of Forests-2018 theme facilitates the platform to enhance awareness of the crucial role of the forests in storing carbon, which helps lessen the impacts of climate change in urban areas.

International Day of Forests was first instituted on 28th November 2012, to be celebrated on 21st March, by the declaration of United Nations General Assembly, which was formed by unifying the two international commemorations; the World Forestry Day and Forest Day.

World Forestry Day was established in the year 1971 at the 23rd General Assembly of European Confederation of Agriculture and was decided to be celebrated as an annual event celebration on 21st of March by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Forest has a great importance in the earth. It plays an important part in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem, such as: Positively Impacting Local climate, Reducing Air Pollution, Reducing Water Scarcity & Flooding, Facilitating Rains, Devising Holistic Living and Encouraging Tourism, Help in Relaxation etc.
