New Delhi celebrated its 87th anniversary as a capital city of India on 13th February 2018. It remained the capital city since undivided India during British rule.
New Delhi is India’s current modern capital city. Its Raisina Hill complex, an imperial government architectural body was formed and inaugurated on 13th February 1931 by Viceroy Lord Irwin.
The Viceroy and Governor- General of India Lord Charles Hardinge had written a suggestion letter to Secretary of State for India, explaining Great Britain the significance of making Delhi as a capital city. The letter was sent on 25th August 1911, from Shimla to London.
New Delhi imperial city foundation was laid on December 12, 1911, during a grand ceremonial of ‘Delhi Durbar’ when British crowned King George V had announced the transferring of the British capital from Calcutta to Delhi.
Delhi’s name to "New Delhi" was kept on 31st December 1926.
At present, Delhi officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), It is the capital city and a Union Territory of India. Delhi is also the centre of the National Capital Region (NCR).
