The National Statistics Day is celebrated every year on 29th June across India with an aim to raise public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.
The National Statistics Day was first declared by the 'Government of India' in the year 2006, to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s eminent statistician, Late Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The day also commemorates the contributions made by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics and economic planning.
Last year in 2018, celebrations of the National Statistics Day marked the closing ceremony of a year-long celebration of 125th birth anniversary of Late Professor PC Mahalanobis started in 2017.
The National Statistics Day 2019 theme is “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. The theme has been chosen for intensive and focused discussions towards filling the data gaps and improvement of timelines/quality in SDGs.
PC Mahalanobis was born on 29 June 1893 in Kolkata. Died on 28 June 1972 in Kolkata. He is often called as 'Father of Indian Statistics'.
PC Mahalanobis was the first Indian statistician to receive world recognition. In 1933, he had founded the first Indian statistical journal Sankhya.
The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), set up by Prof Mahalanobis in 1931 as an autonomous “Institute of National Importance” through an act of Parliament in 1959, celebrates 29 June as the “Worker Day”.
