Finance Ministry of India and National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) has approved the project for India’s first Freight Village spread over around 100 acres.
The plan to set up this strategically positioned Freight Village in Varanasi will compound close to the upcoming multi-mode terminal at Ram Nagar, along with the River Ganges.
The World Bank has facilitated the project will also connect to the National highway and India’s longest waterway, the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The Freight Village project will get established at cost of approx INR 3000 Cr and will get the facilities of Warehouse, Cold-Storage, Packaging-Wrapping, Cargo Storage, Road Transportation and other modern facilities. It is believed, that the project will not only bring investment but will also generate employment.
According to Praveen Pandey, Vice Chairman, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) the construction of Ganges channel, NW-1 (Varanasi to Haldia) will get started in 2018, with the estimated cost of INR 1400 Cr.
