Zojila Pass Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir, which will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh, foundation stone has been laid by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on 19th May 2018.
Zojila Pass Tunnel located at a height of above 11,000 feet, also known as the gateway to Ladakh region and connects Kargil and Leh with Srinagar.
Zojila Pass Tunnel would be India’s longest road tunnel and the longest 2 lanes bi-directional tunnel in Asia and is expected to build by the year 2026.
Zojila Pass Tunnel project aims to construct 14.150 km long 2 lanes bi-directional single tube tunnel with a parallel 14.200 km long passing tunnel between Baltal and Minamarg in the state of J&K.
Zojila Pass Tunnel project is believed to be completed with a total capital cost of Rs 6809 crores in seven years. With this, the time distance between Srinagar and Leh will get to 15 minutes to 3.5 hours.
Zojila Pass Tunnel project in J&K, expectantly lead to the socio-economic, employability and cultural integration of these regions ensuring safe, fast and cheap connectivity.
Zojila Pass Tunnel also foresees a possibility of rail alignment in future times. Apart from this, Srinagar-Jed-turn on Leh Highway, a 6.5 Km long tunnel is expected to be completed by next year.
Zojila Pass Tunnel will be constructed jointly by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) with IL&FS Transportation Networks Limited.
Zojila Pass Tunnel will also help to check the growing influence of Pakistan and China in the Ladakh region and facilitate quick mobilisation of troops in case of any incursion from across the border.
