Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Buddha Jayanti celebrations on the Gautam Buddha birth anniversary on 30 April 2018 at the National Museum, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
Buddha Jayanti-2018 celebrations are organised by the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC).
Earlier in the year 2015, Narendra Modi had announced that Buddha Jayanti Day would be commemorated and celebrated as an annual event in India.
Buddha Jayanti-2018 celebrations featured several Buddhist institutions coming together to demonstrate the various facets of Buddhist traditions.
PM Narendra Modi, during his speech at the event, highlighted that India has never been an aggressor and that religious thoughts born in India have always been considerate of others. Indian religions are inclusive and tolerant.
PM Narendra Modi further proclaimed that Central theme of all religious thoughts born in India which focuses on humanity. He also offered ‘Sangha Dana’ to the Venerated Sanghas.
Buddha Jayanti-2018 celebrations were set up by an organizing committee under the chairmanship of Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma with Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju as co-chairperson.
Ven Dr. Dhammapiya, secretary general of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), a global umbrella Buddhist body headquartered in New Delhi, is the convener of the organising committee in India.
