World Day For Animals in Laboratories (WDAIL) also called as World Lab Animal Day is observed every year on 24 April.
World Day For Animals in Laboratories coinciding week from 24th April onward is observed as "World Week for Animals In Laboratories".
World Day for Animals in Laboratories highlights the suffering and killing of millions of innocent sentient beings in laboratories throughout the world. Now days, the event is marked by demonstrations and protests by groups opposed to the use of animals in research.
World Day for Animals in Laboratories encourages people across the world to take stand against the pain and suffering caused to millions of animals all in the name of research.
World Day for Animals in Laboratories was established in 1979 by the British National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS). The date 24 April was chosen as it marked the birthday of former NAVS president Hugh Dowding, 1st Baron Dowding.
NAVS and other groups opposed to animal research have claimed that World Day for Animals in Laboratories is recognised by the United Nations. Although, the day is not included on the official list of United Nations observances.
NAVS described the WDAIL day as an "international day of commemoration" for animals in laboratories.
