Mughalsarai Junction came into existence in 1862 on the railway route from Delhi to Howrah. East India Company took steps to bring up Mughalsarai Railway Station in Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh.
In June 2017, the present government of Uttar Pradesh passed a resolution to change the name of Nagar Palika and Railways Station after Pt.Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.
There are around 200 passenger trains to pass through Mughalsarai Railways Station daily. Daily traffic makes Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay formally Mughalsarai Railway Station one of the busiest Railways junction on Indian rail routes.
In Railways reservation system reservation code for Mughalsarai station be changed to DDU from MGS.
