India’s First Sign Language Dictionary Launched- Details, Features, Purpose, Background, History
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot launched the first Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary comprising of 3000 words on 23rd March 2018 at a function in New Delhi.
The dictionary has been developed by Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre (ISLR&TC) under the guidance of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD).
The dictionary’s main objective is to suppress the communication barriers between the deaf and hearing communities, as it is focused on providing more information in Indian sign language.
The dictionary also aims to give the deaf people the constitutional right to speech and opportunity for freedom of expression and also to amalgamate them into the mainstream of the society.
The dictionary consists of 3000 words of (Hindi/English) now but will be updated soon with new Indian Sign Language words.
The dictionary is comprised words of several categories such as; Legal terms, Medical terms, Academic terms, Technical terms and Daily use words and videos are clearly subtitled.
Background
The Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre had been working on developing the Indian Sign Language Dictionary since the past one and a half years. According to the 2011 census, there are 50, 71,007 deaf people and 19, 98,535 with speech disability in India.
