Mihir (Meaning Sun) supercomputer would be the one adding to India's largest HPC facility in terms of peak capacity and performance. It will increase India's rank to 4th position after Japan, U.K and the U.S in terms of devoted HPC facilities for weather & climate forecasts in the world.
Ministry of Earth Science (MoES) has procured HPC facility to 6.8 Peta Flops (PF) which has been installed at IITM, Pune with 4.0 Peta Flops capacity and 2.8 Peta Flops capacity in NCMRWF, Noida.
The new HPC will deliver the facility for improving weather and climate forecasts, such as: High resolution range of weather forecast at block level; Prediction of cyclones with more accuracy and lead time; Ocean state forecast including marine water quality forecast; Tsunami forecast with greater lead time; Air quality forecasts for various cities and Climate projections at very high resolution.
