Union Government Expanded Anti-Narcotics Scheme for 3 years- Details, Highlights, Purpose

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has expanded the Anti-Narcotics Scheme, further, for the duration of 3 more years from 2017-18 to 2020.

The expanding of Anti-Narcotics duration is made in order to restrict and counter illicit trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances. For this step, an allocation of an estimated budget of Rs 21 crore is proposed.

The Anti-Narcotics scheme is aimed to assist State Governments and Union Territories which are contributing in controlling the inter-state and cross-border drug trafficking.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) being the national nodal agency for drug administration will process the requests from State Governments and UTs for providing financial assistance to all the anti-narcotics agencies in order to uphold their enforcement capabilities to restrict illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The NCB will also provide financial backup for all capacity building activities, which includes training of personnel etc.

As per the MHA officials, the decision was undertaken considering the rise of 40 lakhs (approx) drug addicts in India, most common drugs abuse consume 'ganja', 'hashish', 'opium', 'heroin' and abused of pharmaceutical preparations like 'buprenorphine', codeine-based cough syrups and painkillers like 'proxivon' has also assumed in huge proportions.

The s Anti-Narcotics scheme was first introduced on 24th October 2004, for a period of five and later extended twice in consequetive years.
