Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Vijaya- Launched Details, Features, Benefits, Role in coastal security

Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ‘Vijaya’ constructed and designed by Larsen & Turbo (L&T) Shipyard for Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was launched on 20th January 2018 at Kattupalli Shipyard, Tamil Nadu.

The second launched OPV ‘Vijaya’ constructed by L&T Shipyard is expected to be instated into service by September 2018.

OPV ‘Vijaya’ is 98 metres long and 14.8 metres wide, with the gross tonnage of 2,100 tonnes.A long-range surface ship has an endurance of 5,000 nautical miles with cruising speed of 12-14 knots which can be boost to 26 knots. It is fitted with two units of diesel engines of 9,000 kW each, with least fuel utilisation.

OPV ‘Vijaya’ equipped with state of radar, navigational and communication system, with helicopter operation capabilities, and roles including coastal and offshore patrolling, policing maritime zones of India, control & surveillance, anti-smuggling, anti-terrorist and anti-piracy with limited wartime roles.

Ministry of Defence, in March 2015, signed a contract of Rs 1,432 crore with L&T Shipyard at Kattupalli to build and fabricate a series of seven OPVs for the Indian Coast Guard.

The first OPV ‘Vikram’ indigenously manufactured by L&T Shipyard was launched on 27th October 2017 and is expected to be instated into service by March or April 2018.
