Merriam-Webster has picked ‘Justice’ as the Word Of The Year 2018. According to the Merriam-Webster, the word ‘Justice’ is used in many phrases like racial justice, social justice and obstruction of justice.
Merriam-Webster is a US company famous for its dictionaries and also known for reference books that it publishes.
Merriam-Webster was founded by George and Charles Merriam in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1828. Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. acquired Merriam-Webster in 1964 as its subsidiary company.
Every year Merriam-Webster, the American dictionary-publishing company, publishes the list of Words of the Year. The ‘List of Words of the Year’ contains the ten English language words of the year.
Merriam-Webster started publishing the list in 2003 and have been publishing at the end of every year since then. Initially, the company chose the words based on popular searches on its website. Since 2006, the words in the list are selected by an online poll and by suggestions from readers.
The words selected by Merriam Webster are usually a reflection of the events that take place during that year. For example, the Word of the Year for 2005 was ‘Integrity’, which showed the immense interest that general public had in defining this word amid all the ethics scandals and controversies in the US government, corporations, and sports.
The Word of the Year for 2016 was ‘Surreal’ and for 2017 was ‘Feminism’.
