Maldives Abdulla Shahid elected 76th President of UNGA

 

 

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid wins President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Election defeating Afghanistan counterpart

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been elected President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He will be the president of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Maldives got a total of 143 votes while Afghanistan got a total of 48 votes.

Shahid Abdullah will take charge in September. India has expressed great happiness on the victory of Shahid Abdullah. Abdullah Shahid will replace UNGA President Volkan Bozkir.

Indian diplomats were helping from behind the scenes in campaigning for the Maldives. When Maldives announced its candidate for the post of President of the 76th General Assembly a year ago, India had been busy campaigning for him.

Abdullah Shahid's victory in the United Nations is considered good for India. It is expected that Shahid's stay in the United Nations till September 2022 will keep him in good coordination with India. India will be a member of the United Nations Security Council till 2022. Therefore, there will be good coordination between Maldives and India in the United Nations.

This is the first time that a representative of the Maldives is going to become the President of the United Nations General Assembly.
