Krishna Sobti is a Hindi Fiction writer and essayist. She is well known for her novel Mitro Marajani (1966), an unapologetic portrayal of a married woman’s sexuality.
Krishna Sobti is also known for experimenting with new styles and forms of writing and creating bold and daring characters in her stories who were ready to accept all challenges.
Krishna Sobti was born on 18 February 1925 in Gujarat, Pakistan’s Punjab Province. She completed her education in India (Delhi) and Shimla. She began her higher education in at Fatehchand College in Lahore (Pakistan). She returned to India when the partition took place.
Krishna Sobti’s writing language was influenced by the intermingling of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi cultures and her choice of subjects ranged from the Partition and relationships amid man and woman to the changing dynamics of the Indian society and the gradual deterioration of human values.
Krishna Sobti’s some popular works include Daar se Bichhudi, Dil-o-Danish, Badalom ke Ghere, Yaaron Ke Yaar, Mitron Marjani, and Zindaginama.
Several of her works have been translated into English and other Indian languages and also in foreign languages such as Swedish and Russian.

The Sahitya Akademi Award, Katha Chudamani Award, Shiromani Award and Hindi Academy Award. She was also honored with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship- the highest honor of the Akademi- in 1996.
In 2015, she returned both, the Award, and her Fellowship, citing governmental inaction following riots in Dadri, concerns regarding freedom of speech and comments made by a government minister concerning Hindi writers.
Krishna Sobti was offered the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2010, which she declined.
Presently, Krishna Sobti to be honored with the 53rd Jnanpith Award for the year 2017.
